Connecting eateries and shops to consumers with discounts on surplus goods
Each year, the EU generates over 59 million tonnes of food waste, averaging 132 kg per person (Eurostat, 2024), with an estimated market value of €132 billion. Globally, approximately a third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted.
Polish Foodsi, founded by Mateusz Kowalczyk and Kuba Fryszczyn, aims to combat food waste by helping restaurants, bakeries, and stores sell surplus food. The company has created a platform that allows eateries and shops to sell off surplus food with up to 70% discounts.
“Resources get wasted at many points along the supply chain and in different markets. We’re working on new ideas to change that. We’re testing various ways to save resources and hope to share more soon,” says Mateusz Kowalczyk, CEO and co-founder of Foodsi.
The company announced they had raised €1.2 million in a seed round extension, bringing the total value of the round to over €2.5 million.
The financing was provided by existing and new investors, including AIP Seed, Satus Starter, and AC/VC Impact Fund. The new funds will enable Foodsi to continue growing, expand its product and sales teams, and increase operational efficiency. The company is also preparing for the subsequent funding round.
2 million users and 6,000 partner venues
“We are immensely impressed by the continuous and dynamic growth of the company, which is a result of the hard work of the founders and the entire Foodsi team. We believe that the additional investment will provide the necessary fuel to continue this trend, among other things by enabling the implementation of Mateusz and Kuba’s next ideas. Additionally, we are pleased that we will participate to a greater extent in this success,” says Bartek Knichnicki, Partner at Satus Starter.
According to their data, the mobile application is used by nearly 2 million users who have saved almost 5 million food packages. Foodsi partners with over 6,000 venues across Poland, including major cities like Warsaw, Wrocław, Kraków, and others.
Foodsi launched a pilot program for manufacturers to sell near-expiry, seasonal, rebranded, and overproduced items directly to consumers at discounted prices. This offering includes food, meal kits, cosmetics, plants, and other goods that could otherwise be wasted.
